Description

At the opening of Llanfyllin’s first secondary school in 1900, the local rector defended education against those who opposed its spread at that time: “Such sentiments, in his opinion, were radically wrong, unless ignorance was preferable to knowledge, and darkness to light.” From Darkness to Light has now become the title of a book written by Richard Kretchmer and Pauline Page-Jones about the Llanfyllin schools – from the earliest times to the creation of Ysgol Llanfyllin in 2020.

The impetus for this book was an invitation from the Headteacher and Governors of Ysgol Llanfyllin who thought the closure of separate Primary and Secondary Schools would be a good time to look at the development of education in Llanfyllin. Much of the story is told by former children and teachers at the schools and their voices are woven in with the twists and turns of social, political and educational changes that have affected us all. This includes the local impact of huge events like the two World Wars.

From Darkness to Light is a book full of history and photographs and will make an ideal Christmas present for anyone who went to school in Llanfyllin, is interested in the history of Llanfyllin or who wants proof that education is the foundation of human development.
