Elvey MacDonald was born in Trelew in 1941 to a family active in the Welsh and Welsh-language cultural and religious life of Y Wladfa. He was a student at Coleg Harlech before taking a job with the National Eisteddfod of Wales and later serving as Director of Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s National Eisteddfod.

The history of Y Wladfa was one of his main interests, and he was a guest speaker for numerous societies throughout Wales. He organized trips to Patagonia for many years, teaching travellers about the history and development of Y Wladfa since the beginning of the settlement in 1865. He died in Wales on 23 November 2022.
