Heini Gruffudd has lived all his life in Swansea, working as a teacher, translator, and lecturer. He has taught Welsh to adults and has written a number of books for learners. His book Yr Erlid (The Persecution) won the Welsh Book of the Year award in 2013. He has been at the forefront of campaigns for Welsh-medium education, both locally and nationally, and is also the chair of Dyfodol i'r Iaith ("A Future for the Language"). He was one of the founders of the Welsh-language centre Tŷ Tawe
