Description
“Soniasom am y pethau ffôl na ŵyr
Ond llanciau gaffael ynddynt liw na gwres,
Y pethau a gerdd ar lanw eu gwaed fin hwyr,
A phorthi heb borthi’u blys; a’u tynnu’n nes."
Edward Prosser Rhys (1901-1945) was a poet, journalist and publisher who made a significant contribution to Welsh life during his comparatively short life as the founder of Gwasg Aberystwyth and the Clwb Llyfrau Cymraeg.
As a poet, he will perhaps remain best known for his pryddest, Atgof (memory), which won him the Crown at the National Eisteddfod in 1924: a poem that generated some considerable controversy due to its frank portrayal of sexual intercourse, including an unambiguous portrayal of sex between two men. However, this was only one aspect of poetry of this pioneering and important figure.
This is the first publication of Prosser Rhys's poetry since the 1950s. An extended foreword by Gareth Evans-Jones introduces the poet and places the poems in their context.
