William Williams is one of Wales’ most remarkable literary figures. Known primarily for his hymns in the Welsh language – of which he wrote almost 1000 – he is also known for his English hymn Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, and was seen by Saunders Lewis as the first European Romantic Poet. But he also wrote works of fact and fiction in both prose and verse, displaying a great knowledge of science, medicine and astronomy. In total, his name is associated with 90 publications, and possibly his most impressive work was a study of the world’s great religions, Pantheologia. But he is primarily known as one of the great Methodist revivalists of the 18th century in Wales, and the foremost hymn-writer of that movement which has had a lasting influence on the religious and cultural life of his country. This collection shows how his hymns lend themselves to all styles of singing, and the natural simplicity of his work means that his hymns are constantly revisited, and as shown by tracks 2 and 14, are sometimes combined with verses by other authors.
