Description

The forgotten Manor of Talerddig reached along the watershed of Montgomeryshire from Pont Llogel in the north to Clywedog in the south.  For 150 years, from 1548, it belonged to a family who are just as forgotten, the Purcells.

Dr Melvin Humphreys has written about the history of the manor, the Purcell family and their mansion at Plas Newydd near Carno.  Specifically, the study looks at how the Purcell family developed their upland estate by creating a number of new farms from the common and waste land.

This book is an important study of upland economy and society in Montgomeryshire at a turning point in it's history.

Melvin says: "The amount of evidence of creating new farms throughout the manor - at Bwlchyfedwen, in Cwm Nant yr Eira, around Talerddig - is honestly astonishing.  More than that, in a number of documents about the manor we hear ordinary people talking about taking their cattle to graze on the moorlands in the summer, building their summer houses and temporary shelters to make butter and cheese, and inevitably arguing with their neighbours about these ancient usage laws".

This book also examines the circumstances behind John and Eleanor Purcell building Plas Newydd - one of the most important half timbered houses in Wales - around 1650.
